Ambien is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic drug used for insomnia. It has fast effects and usually works within 15 minutes, but does not have the ability to keep a person sleeping, just initiating it. It is a drug also used for other brain disorders and is often used for a short term time span of two to six weeks. The side effects of Ambien are serious and its usage needs to be closely monitored by a doctor.
Several users of Ambien have stopped using it as they find out that the hypnotic effects of the drug actually cause them to get up in the night and do things that they don't remember the next day. changes in behavior and thought patterns are a part of this side effect. Some people drive somewhere like the store and buy food, go home and cook and never remember doing it. The evidence is there the next day or a loved one saw them get up and leave. This is a dangerous side-effect of Ambien and the doses of it need to be right and monitored closely, to know what a person can handle.
A person may experience bitter hallucinations or delusions that cause confusion and problems in their life. A patient must report these side effects right away to their health care professional.
Either nausea or increased hunger can be a side effect of Ambien and one or the other is not healthy. Several of the sleepwalkers will get up and fix all kinds of food, even cooking a meal and eating, then go back to bed and not remember doing it.
Another side effect of Ambien can be frequent headaches that increase over time. This is something also to report right away to your doctor as you may need to switch to another medication.
Ambien can cause physical dependence on it and a rebound effect of insomnia when stopped. It is advised that Ambien not be used more than 12 weeks at the most and the amounts and days should be determined carefully. Withdrawals will be the result of the addiction and will have to be closely monitored by a doctor.
A good alternative to Ambien would be an natural remedy like 5HTP, which converts brain chemicals into serotonin, the brain sleep chemical.
