Instead of tossing food items into the trash can and piling on to already close-to-capacity landfills, consider composting.
Some people use an old crock pot. Almost anything with a secure lid will do. The lid keeps odors and pests out. For some, however, the container has to look nice and fit with the kitchens decor.
The best place to keep your compost container is in a base cabinet near the sink, which is where you handle a lot of the scraps that wind up in your compost bin.
Your containers don't have to be specifically made for handling compost. You can purchase a stainless-steel trash can, and place it in a cabinet door, so it pivots out when the cabinet door opens.
You can also look for some nice enameled-steel compost pails in any color. These have secure lids, and removable liners that allow for easy transport to the compost bin, and charcoal filters in the lid to cut down odors.
Make sure you line your compost container with a biodegradable bag, so there is not need to carry the pail out to the compost bin-and no need to clean the pail on a daily basis.
