Even if your attic is cramped and filled with cross members, you can probably find room for storage. Just cover accessible areas around the hatch with a floor of 3/4-inch plywood. Don't store heavy items there if your joists are more than 16 inches apart.
If you have trouble getting plywood through the hatch to floor your attic, saw the sheets into widths that will go through. Then fit them back together in the attic.
Attic searches will be easier if you arrange items so that you can quickly survey everything from the attic hatch or doorway. Keep related articles near one another, and label cartons in large letters.
To protect attic-stored items from dust, put smaller articles in tightly closed or sealed boxes or bins. Cover furniture and other large items with plastic drop cloths.
For storage along a gable wall, simply install shelves with brackets or with standards and brackets. Make each shelf progressively shorter to fit between the slopping sides at each end.
To make shelves under eaves, run uprights between the rafters and joists (or floor). Then run shelf supports from the upright to the rafters. You can make shelves the same way under stairs with exposed stringers.
I wish I had an attic to use these helpful tips. h5
Wonderful tips for use of the attic. I love putting ply wood down to make it easier to move around.
