As autumn approaches a seasonal set of dangers lurks. Keep your pet safe this fall by avoiding these cool weather pet dangers.
As the temperatures begins to drop, it's time to flush the radiator in the car. If you're adding antifreeze to the radiator, make sure the family pet is not able to taste any of the highly toxic coolant.
Many wildlife creatures prepare for hibernation in the fall. Avoid taking the family dog for walks in tall grasses or forested areas. Sluggish snakes, lizards and tortoises may bite.
If Halloween candy sits near the front door in anticipation of trick-or-treaters, keep pets away from the bowl. Artificial sweeteners (such as xylitol) and chocolates are toxic to pets.
Stay on sidewalks or marked trails for fall evening walks. Some varieties of wild mushrooms, such as death cap mushrooms, are toxic to humans and pets.
Rodents such as rats and mice often seek refuge in basements and garages when the weather turns cold. If you must use rodenticide for this problem, keep all containers of poison far from the pet's reach.
