Apples are of course good for everyone, but there are extra reasons to eat them if you are diabetic.
Apples have 4 grams of fiber. The 4 grams of fiber that apples provide give you 20% of your daily recommended amount of fiber, getting enough fiber in one's diet is very important all in itself in keeping our bodies healthy yet most people don't get nearly as much fiber as they should.
The great thing about the fiber in apples is that it is both insoluble and soluble. Insoluble fiber is good for bowel health, therefore it assures that you system is moving the way it should. The insoluble fiber in apples comes by way of pectin and this pectin has an effect for calming diarrhea. Pectin is also good because it works with the sugars of the apple to slow nutrient absorption which is why it is beneficial to people with diabetes. The slowing of the nutrient absorption helps to keep blood sugar under control.
Diabetics are in greater risk then most people of developing heart disease. The soluble fiber in apples helps to lower cholesterol which can fight the effects that diabetes has on one's heart.
The high quercetin content in apples is what helps fight cholesterol and helps to keep it from becoming attached to your artery walls.
Of course fiber is also good for helping you control your eating better. If you fill up on fiber there will be less room in your stomach for bad things and since apples are tasty and sweet they help to satisfy your sweet tooth but in a positive way.
Since they have only around 80 calories and 0 grams of fat you won't gain weight eating them and they will satisfy you so you don't eat things that not so good for.
Another benefit of quercetin is that it has cancer fighting capabilities.
Aside from a nice amount of fiber apples provide 3 grams of protein. They also contain 1% of our daily recommended requirement of Vitamin A, 9% of our daily requirement of Vitamin C, 1% of our daily requirement of Calcium, and 1% or iron.
As I said above diabetes puts people at a greater risk for heart disease, it also puts people at greater risk for stroke. People who eat apples regularly usually have lower cases of embolic strokes. These strokes are caused by a tiny blood clot that blocks an artery in the brain. It is not known exactly why.
The high quercetin content apples is what helps.
You need to make sure you eat the peel though for these benefits.
If you are diabetic be sure to combine your apple snacking with some sort of protein such nuts, peanut butter, or cheese. Cottage cheese with chunks of apples is the perfect snack. Remember to leave the peel on.
I love apples and eat them almost daily!
