With winter in full swing we should take a moment to review a few seasonal hazards that may have serious consequences for your family pet.
Make sure to wipe off your pets paws (be sure to get between the toes) whenever they come inside. Removing all the snow, ice and ice melting chemicals is essential. For animals low to the ground be sure to clean their legs and bellies as well. For even further protection try using little booties when your pets go out for walks.
Be sure any antifreeze spills are cleaned up entirely and any containers of antifreeze are kept out of reach of your animals. The sweet smell and taste of this harmful chemical attracts your pets and is very deadly.
Snow is no substitute for the water that your pets need to stay hydrated. Be sure they have access to clean, unfrozen water. Also be sure your pets are well fed during the winter months to help offset the extra calories (energy) they will burn in keeping warm, but be sure not to overfeed.
Just like our fingers & toes are more susceptible to the cold, your pets ears and tail can become frostbitten easier as well. Don't forget about your thin/short haired breeds, they loose body heat rapidly in freezing temps. Keep your eyes open for any whitish or gray coloring on the nose, ears, or pads of feet.
Winter is the season when more dogs are lost than any of the other seasons, so be sure your pet has a current ID. Because dogs can easily lose their scent in snowy, winter conditions, you will want to keep them leashed when outside.
Though your pet has a fur coat it does not mean he can withstand freezing temperatures for prolonged periods so please do not leave them outdoors. Also, be wary of items we use routinely during the winter months, such as antifreeze and ice melt, these can be extremely harmful to your critters.
Keep you and your pets safe and warm this winter season!
