Every year Hollywood is abuzz over the movies that covet top awards. The film industry is a multi-billion dollar business, which in many cases makes the awards even more valuable. Here's a list of the top five awards that are given out annually.
Also known as the Oscars, the Academy Awards are the biggest and most popular of film awards. "On the road to the Oscars" is a popular term that is often used to highlight films, actors and directors that win other awards which have a high probability of getting them nominated for an Oscar. Nominations for 2012 will be announced on January 24, 2012 and the award show broadcast will be seen on Sunday, February 26th.
The SAG awards are voted on by members of the Screen Actors Guild, the largest union of working actors in the world. SAG Awards are available for television as well as film. Nominees for 2012 were announced on December 14, 2011. Their awards can be seen on January 29, 2012.
The Golden Globes are the annual awards given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which has been covering the Entertainment industry for 68 years. Golden Globe nominees for 2012 were announced December 15, 2011. The awards show can be seen January 15, 2012.
The Sundance Film Festival is an important venue for many in the film community, especially those who don't have major studio backing (funding). Documentaries, short films and independent films by first-time directors and screenwriters often find exposure for their projects. The 2012 festival will take place January 19-29, 2012 in Ogden, Salt Lake City and Sundance, Utah.
The 65th Festival de Cannes will be held May 16-27, 2012. This annual competition has been around since 1939, and has earned a legendary international reputation within the film industry. The Cannes Film Festival takes place in the beautiful coastal city of Cannes, France.
