Scoliosis is the medical term for an abnormal, side-to-side curvature of the spine. The most common type of scoliosis is adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), which has no known cause.
Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis usually presents in adolescents who are experiencing a significant growth spurt. Girls are more likely than boys to be affected by AIS, although it is unknown why.
It used to be common practice to have schools screen adolescent students for signs of scoliosis. However, since many schools no longer perform screening, it is important to keep a close eye an adolescent's back, shoulders, and hips for signs of uneven-ness.
When an adolescent's hips, shoulders, or back seem uneven it is important to see a doctor immediately. Progression of scoliosis curves can be rapid, so acting quickly is critical.
Make an appointment with a pediatric orthopedist who specializes in abnormalities of the spine. They are the only ones qualified to determine the severity of scoliosis, and how it should be treated.
