Ray Charles has been credited with the birth of "soul" music. Glaucoma is the cause of his blindness, and Ray Charles has been blind since the age of six. Ray Charles is perhaps best known for his incredible hit song, "Georgia on My Mind."
North Carolina born Ronnie Milsap is a well known country and western performer and pianist. He was born with a congenital eye defect that left him with little vision, and what vision he had was lost in childhood. He is not bitter about his life long blindness. Ronnie Milsap is known for such hits as "What a Difference You've Made in My Life" and "It Was Almost Like a Song."
Stevie Wonder has been blind since shortly after birth. He was born prematurely, and blames his blindness on too much oxygen in his hospital incubator. He has always been musical. He signed his first record contract with Motown at a young age and had his first hit by the age of thirteen, with "Fingertips." Stevie Wonder is world famous for such hits as "Superstition" and "I Just Called to Say I Love You."
Jose Feliciano has been blind since birth as a result of congenital glaucoma. He was born in Puerto Rica, and is known for such hit songs as "Feliz Navidad" and "Light My Fire."
Actor and singer Tom Sullivan, like Stevie Wonder, has been blind his entire life because of a condition known as retinopathy of prematurity, which is caused by oxygen deprivation as well as too much oxygen given to a premature infant. He is one of but a few people who have ever been chosen to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl.
Nice list and good example of how to write here...kind of a good length and appropriate amount of information. As I read lists here, that's the kind of thing I try to learn from.
Great list of blind musicians.
Believe it or not, I saw Ronnie Milsap when he sang "Never Had It So Good" back when I was a child. Mr. Milsap was a Ray Charles type singer then, very impressive and soulful and yet I feel that his move to Country and Western was a good one. I have always liked all of the people on the list.
Always a pleasure to read you lists. Congratulations on the front page spot! high five too!
Congrats on front page! H5! Don't forget the wonderful opera star Andrea Bocelli!
