Any time you travel to an area you've not been to before, it is useful to bring along a travel guide. These nifty little books are worth their weight in gold, as the information they contain will enhance your vacation and lead you to destinations you otherwise would have been unaware existed. If you are a AAA member, be aware that they provide comprehensive free tour books as a membership benefit.
Even if you think you know the way to where you are going, it's always a good idea to take a GPS or road atlas along. All it takes is a pileup on the interstate to cause a traffic backup guaranteed to ruin your day. Having a map or GPS will allow you to devise alternate routes in such a situation, and will insure you are aware of all of your options as you plot your course of travel. If you're a member of AAA, be sure and take advantage of their "Triptiks," which are customized map guides for specific journeys.
Particularly if you're vacationing in a beautiful or historic spot, or even if you're just visiting family, be sure to pack your camera. This is definitely an item you'd rather bring and not need than need and not have brought!
If you're picky about your pillows, be sure and bring your own. Dress them in brightly colored pillow cases to make them stand out from the typically white pillows of motels and rental houses. If you you will be traveling long distances by car, you'll find them useful for napping in the car, as well!
Be sure and pack and prescription medications as well as frequently used or 'just in case' over the counter remedies such as Tylenol and Advil. If you wear contact lens, pack an extra set of lens.
