Some people are spooked by the year 2012 because December 21, 2012 is the end of the Mayan Calendar. Others are concerned that the earth and the sun are going to be in alignment with the center of the galaxy this year. Whether you believe in this theory or not, 2012 does look like it will be a chaotic year, at least on a global scale.
There will be some interesting date combinations in 2012. On January 2, it was 1/2/12. January 21, it is 1/21/12. On February 12, we will see the date 2/12/12. On December 12, we will see 12/12/12. The end of the Mayan calendar will be on 12/21/12. Although we will see a 1/31/13, 3/13/13, and 3/31/13 next year, the date combinations won't be quite as interesting; this is the last year (for another century) that the year and the month will have the same numbers.
If the end of the Mayan calendar weren't enough to scare you, there are three Friday the 13ths in this year. This last happened in 2009. The next time that it will happen is in 2015. After that, you're going to have to wait until 2026 to experience three Friday 13ths in one year.
In 2012, there will be two Olympic events, and one presidential election. The First Winter Youth Olympics took place from January 13th to January 22nd in Innsbruck, Australia. In the summer, the regular Summer Olympics will take place from July 27th until August 12th, 2012. The US Presidential Election will take place on November 6th.
2012 is expected to be the year where sunspot activity during Solar Cycle 24 reaches its maximum. The sunspot cycle averages about 11 years; at the beginning of each solar cycle, sunspot activity is at a minimum. This solar cycle began in the beginning of 2008. When sunspot activity reaches its maximum, the magnetic poles of the sun will reverse.
Thanks for this list of facts. Good job on this one.
