Unlike cats, dogs have the ability to bark. The littler they are, the more they bark. If you have a little dog, you will be fully aware of when your neighbor (three blocks over) has arrived home. The bigger dogs tend to bark at things closer to the home. There is little chance of someone sneaking into your yard without Fido knowing about it.
While robbers are fully aware that not every big, scary dog is a biter they will certainly be less likely to target your home for invasion. Unless they bring a nice steak, Fido isn't going to let them in the house.
Yes, cats enjoy the occasional affectionate petting too, but it's more on their terms, whereas dogs are down for a good rub anytime. They will curl up next to you on the bed or at your feet when you sit on the couch. They will playfully bound into your lap for kisses even if they are no longer 20 pounds.
If you tell a cat to roll over, what happens? It just sits there and blinks at you. But not only can you teach a dog to roll over, you can teach them to fetch, sit, come, stay, and search. You can even teach them to play dead when you shoot them with a pretend gun, or to "tap out" when you wrestle. Dogs are smart, and learn commands quickly. Think about this, when search and rescue teams go out to find someone, do they use cats or dogs?
Never again will you need someone to go walking with. Your pal Fido is always up for a nice stroll through the neighborhood. All it takes is the word "walk" or for you to grab his leash and he's ready!
A girl may absently scratch a kitten, but the brutal truth is. DOGS GET THE GIRLS!
Yes, dogs are great!
