There's a lot of hungry people out there wondering what they can do to put some food in their bellies. Here's a list of creative ideas for eating well and making a contribution at the same time.
Call up everybody you know and invite 'em to a feast to be prepared by 'yours truly'. Ask them if they can drop you off a few supplies like a case of tomatoes or 40 lbs of potatoes or even a side of beef if you feel they'll cooperate with you. Tell them you need the grub by breakfast time on the day of the feast.
Prepare to spend the day cooking and the evening serving. If you did it right you'll have enough left overs to last a month. AND you will have provided a fantastic dinner to a lot of people. I call that tit for tat.
Swallow your pride and go visit the local food pantry. Yeah, you'll be standing in line with a bunch of folks that make a hobby of going around collecting all the free food they can mooch (shame on them). But you will also be in good company with a lot of other people needin' a hand up. If they can do it you can too.
If this makes you feel especially guilty or undeserving or any other such nonsense you can combat that. Simply pass it on, meaning, do a good deed of your own for someone else when you can. It doesn't have to be food related.
Lots of local farmers could use a hand and would be more than willing to pass you some food for a bit of your time. If you and the farmer are inclined they might even pay you but this isn't about getting money, it's about scaring up some food. If you have neighbors with gardens offer your services for a basket of peas or tomatoes or what have you.
Whatever you do be prepared to work even if for only an hour. I promise you that corn on the cob will taste so much sweeter after a little work.
Look up the local soup kitchens and ask how you can help. Be upfront and tell them you want to help but also need a meal yourself.
On their part they may just find your work contribution far outweighs the cost of a meal. For your part you may just find your calling by helping others.
Now on the surface this might sound a bit self-indulgent. But do you know how many people find items in their food pantry that they will never-ever use.
Go door to door and offer to take those items off your neighbors hands. In the end you will likely get a bunch or items you won't use either but I bet you will get a few surprises as well. You know one man's trash and all that.
Once you've helped your neighbors clean out their panties take whatever you can't or won't use to the food pantry or the soup kitchen and share your wealth of food with others.
Nobody should go hungry lessen they want to.
