When you use less gas you release less toxic fumes into the atmosphere (and you save a few bucks too!)
It's the most obvious way to use less gas, and yet it's the hardest for many of us to actually do. If you're looking to make a change, you can start "small". Make the commitment to walk or bike for short errands or trips that are in the neighborhood (and under a mile.)
Carpooling is a great way to use less gas, just by having one less car on the roads. Don't limit yourself to carpool for school or work only, but consider carpooling to major events, shopping or other activities that you do with friends and family.
You can use significantly less amounts of gas if you plan your weekly shopping or errands and combine stops that are in the vicinity of each other, instead of making multiple trips throughout the week. If the dry cleaners, supermarket and pharmacy are relatively close to one another, doesn't it make sense to combine these errands all in one trip if time allows?
Don't haul around extra items that you don't need in your trunk or back portion of your vehicle. Less weight means less gas, so remove any heavy items or extra "baggage" to lighten the load.
We've become a drive-thru society which unfortunately means you are burning up gas as you sit in the drive-thru lane at the bank, fast food restaurant or pharmacy. Turn off the engine and walk inside. You'll save gas and burn a few more calories by walking!
