As a new mom I quickly discovered the things that were nice to have and the things that I couldn't live without.
My Boppy pillow has been the most helpful baby item I own. It helped support my newborn as I was learning how to breastfeed and now it helps to support my six month old's weight while I nurse. The extra Boppy pillow cases are also a must have. We all know that mishaps occur when there is a little one around and having an extra clean case on hand makes life easier.
We have used our heartbeat and white noise maker starting the day we brought our son home from the hospital. During those first few nervous nights it seemed to help calm and sooth him to sleep a little easier. Now its sounds are so soothing that even my husband and I fall to sleep with it at night!
This book has been a wealth of information. Not only has it answered so many questions I had in the beginning, but it continues to be a great resource. If you are planning to breastfeed this is a must have. In fact, I have a friend who is having a baby latter this year and she will be getting it as a shower gift.
I actually got this tip from my cousin and it worked wonders. When a new baby arrives all our family and friends want to come and give you a well meaning congratulations. Unfortunately their surprise visit doesn't always match up with babies sleeping schedule. Using this front door sign will help to stop well wishers before they accidentally wake you and your baby. Don't worry about offending anyone, they will understand.
I love these bottles for my son. They are specialized to reduce the amount of air your baby gets when drinking from this bottle. That in turn reduces the chance they may have gas pains or get colic. These bottles also reduced the amount of spit up my son had. The only thing to keep in mind with these bottles is that the fast flow nipples seemed to let the milk come out to fast. We switched to only using the slow flow nipples and they worked great.
Every newborn and new mommy are different. Hopefully my list will give you a good place to start looking for your own must haves.
