Cold weather brings higher heating bills. Older home are more likely to have heat loss, although new homes aren't immune from leaking warm air to the outside. Save money on your heating bills by doing a few easy things this weekend.
Draperies have many purposes and the original function was to keep cool air out of the home. Fashion took over when heating was modernized, but we can take a tip from our ancestors and put up a drapery at the window during the winter to prevent drafts. Be sure to allow winter sun to enter, but close the drape during the evening and nighttime hours.
Feeling cold is also about perception. Rugs provide a warm feeling and allow family members who enjoy going shoeless all year a warm place to walk. Throw rugs in kitchens and bathrooms also provide warmth on cold winter days.
Winter blinds position between the drapes and the windows to block cool air into the house. The blinds have an interior core that also helps to block cold air.
Check your door for cool drafts and add plastic weather stripping where you feel a draft. The strips attach with sealant or use small brads and a hammer to attach the stripping. Doors are the main culprits for home hot-air loss.
Nantucket eels are long snake-like tubes filled with sand or heavy foam. The eels can be snugged up tight against window bottoms and between doors and the floor. This prevents heat loss and cool air from entering the room. Eels can also be used to seal off a room that is closed for the winter season.
