Returning to the Biblical characters today.
Isaac was promised to his father Abraham when Abraham was 75 years old (Genesis chapter 12) and the promise was not fulfilled until Abraham was 100 years old and his mother, Sarah, was 90 years old.
Abraham was told to take his son, Isaac, and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on a mountain that God would show him (Genesis Chapter 22). It seems that most of the sermons depict Isaac as young child or perhaps a teenager--he was actually around 25 years old when this happened. God saved Isaac and provided a ram for the offering. This was a test of Abraham's faith.
I love the story of Isaac's wife in Genesis chapter 24. It invovles one of Abraham's servants named Eliezer. It is a great story of faithfulness and dependence on God. Isaac was about 40 when he took Rebekah for his wife.
If you thought your teenagers were bad, you should be thankful that you didn't have to put up with these two! Twins who were fighting for the birthright from the very beginning. Esau was born first with Jacob grabbing his heal during the delivery. Jacob swindles Esau out of his birthright over a meal...and then deceives his Father for the blessing of the firstborn (see point five).
As Isaac nears death, he sends Esau to kill some game and prepare it for him so he can give his blessing. Rebekah overhears the conversation and tells Jacob to get two goats, prepares a meal, covers his arms and neck with hair, and plays part in Jacobs deception of his father in actually stealing the blessing intended for Esau. A feud starts and Jacob leaves to avoid getting killed by his brother (not to worry...that all works out later in the story). Isaac lives to be 180 years old and is buried beside Abraham, his father.
