The beautiful Fennel plant can be used for many, many things: in fact, all parts of the plant are safe for use.
Fennel tea's medicinal properties lay mostly in its digestive effects: it relieves gas,and can treat dyspepsia as well as diarrhea. Fennel tea is also used as a treatment for morning sickness in pregnant women.
Fennel has a distinct taste that is often compared with licorice. It emits a fragrance that can aid in the treatment of anxiety, stress and depression.
Indian people eat fennel seeds raw as it is said to improve eyesight. Ancient Romans regarded fennel as the herb of sight and root extracts were often used to clear cloudy eyes. Extracts of fennel seed have been shown to have a potential use in the treatment of glaucoma. Fennel is also used in so-called 'eye-baths'.
There are historical anecdotes that suggest fennel is a galactogogue, improving the milk supply of a breastfeeding mother. This is however not supported by direct evidence.
It is one of the plants which is said to be disliked by fleas, and powdered fennel has the effect of driving away fleas from kennels and stables.
