Vitamin c, or ascorbic acid, is the most talked about vitamin. Many spectacular claims are made for this vitamin, but none so far has been sustained. Here it is in in Q & A format.
Vitamin C may help to alleviate the severity of the common cold symptoms such as body aches and chills and fever, but will not cure or prevent colds.
A Canadian studied suggested that those who smoked more than 20 cigarettes a day had about 40 per cent less Vitamin C in their blood than non-smokers.
There is no evidence yet that it helps in the treatment of cancer, but the possibility that it may help prevent certain cancers is still being investigated.
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin and is one of the most fragile of all nutrients. Foods that are rich in Vitamin C should be cooked for the minimum period necessary in as little water as possible. Preferably it should be cooked in a stainless steel, aluminium or enamel pan rather than a glass pan because Vitamin C is susceptible to light.
Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant, an agent that prevents food from becoming rancid or turning brown. Since it is also a nutrient, it can be used to enrich or fortify foods.
Remember, the human body's ability to store Vitamin C is limited and therefor the regular intake of Vitamin C is important.
Great post! Thanks! High 5 list!
The chewables taste good too making them easy to take.
I use vitamin C chewables through any cold or flu season. Boosting immunity is a good thing and the body doesn't store C, so an overdose is not a concern. Good list always!
