The peace curriculum is a vital part of the Montessori classroom. Incorporate these items into daily routines to help children learn to be peaceful citizens.
The peace table is a "safe place" where children can come discuss their problems and to resolve conflict. The child who is upset is to invite the other child to the peace table. The child who does the inviting gets to go first, identifying how he feels and what happened to make him feel that way. Children should have some kind of a tool to pass back and forth between them, to indicate whose turn it is to talk. They work together on identifying what happened in the situation, how to avoid having that problem again, and coming to some kind of resolution. When resolution is obtained, they join hands and say, "We declare peace." Children should also feel free to discuss issues with adults here.
The peace flower can be used at the peace table to designate whose turn it is to speak. The peace flower could also be available for children to take to a different area of the classroom, if they need more privacy. The peace flower can also be taken directly to the offending party to indicate a need to have a discussion.
The peace pole can stand prominently outside of the Montessori school or classroom. These poles are made of wood, and have the words for peace from around the world printed on them. Miniature versions are also available to place on a shelf inside the classroom. Children can use the miniature peace poles at the peace table, or for personal reflection.
The peace rug is a place where a child can sit to take a break from the classroom. It is a personal time-out, but not as a punishment. When sitting on a peace rug, the child cannot speak to anyone else, nor may anyone disturb her. She can sit to meditate by closing her eyes, holding a peace object, or performing simple yoga and breathing techniques. The point is to recharge her spirit, then move on.
A peace stone can be a special stone obtained from the outside, or one that has a peace symbol or the word actually printed on it. Children may use this stone at the peace table or on the peace rug.
Several other activities and objects are available for use in the Montessori classroom. Choose which are important to you, and which ones seem to best fit your children's needs.
