Through times of turmoil and times of calm, people are promoting the idea of peace. Peace is respecting your fellow man, respecting the Earth, and respecting yourself. These are the five most popular symbols of peace.
The dove is often associated with the olive branch. It was mentioned several times in the Bible as a sort of representative of God, which many would equate with being peaceful. In the 1950s, Pablo Picasso created a few posters with doves, as a symbol of his dedication to world peace. It is the symbol of the World Peace Congress.
Have you heard the phrase, "to extend the olive branch to someone?" The olive branch has been a symbol of peace since biblical times, and is often also featured with the dove. In the story of Noah and the Ark, Noah sends out a dove to search for signs that the great flood has ended. When the dove returns with an olive branch, the people know God has made the waters recede and they can soon disembark and start anew. The olive branch as a symbol of peace can also be found in numerous other cultures, including the Greeks and Romans. It is often found mentioned in stories and depicted in artwork. It is also a part of the Great Seal of the United States, representing peace.
The peace sign is a vertical line dissecting a circle, with an upside down "v" radiating from the center. It was created in the 1950s as a symbol begging for nuclear disarmament. The shape resembles the semaphore symbols for "n" and "d." Over the years, people have attributed other pagan meanings to it, yet it remains the most popular and recognizable symbol of peace today.
During World War II, people often extended the first two fingers of the hand to indicate victory. When the Vietnam War was underway, the hippies adopted it as a peace symbol. To this day, people are still seen extending the peace sign in pictures and as a greeting.
The Peace Flag is often shown as a rainbow block in reverse order from top to bottom. It starts with violet, then indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red at the bottom. The word for "peace" is printed in the middle in white.
Other symbols of peace do exist, though these are the five that are the most recognizable.
