I just read a scathing expose on the behind the scenes history of the "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" holiday special. Okay, so it wasn't really scathing, but it did answer the burning question, "What is wrong with the doll on the Island of Misfit Toys?" Well, sort of.
The first version that aired on NBC in 1964 contained a song called Fame and Fortune. This scene was later replaced with "We're a Couple of Misfits." For those of you who remember it fondly or for those of you who now have a burning desire to see what you have been missing all of these years, The "Fame and Fortune" scene can be found on You Tube.
Known only as "Dolly for Sue," the red-haired rag doll is seemingly normal in appearance. She never explains what makes her a misfit and for many years, the masses have wondered (and by masses, I mean my husband and myself). Arthur Rankin, producer of the holiday special explained in an interview that Dolly's problem was psychological. Apparently, she suffered from depression as a result of being abandoned. And there goes my theory that her hair bows were set too low on her pigtails.
Why does Yukon Cornelius lick his pick axe? A deleted scene that originally aired at the end of the special explains it all. In this scene, as Rudolph and Santa's sleigh takes off for the Island of Misfit Toys, Yukon sticks his axe in the snow and tastes it yet again. This time he exclaims ""Peppermint! What I've been searching for! I've found me a peppermint mine....yahoooo!" This scene was deleted to make room for the scene of Santa arriving at the Island of Misfit Toys.
In the original, Santa only says "First stop, the Island of Misfit Toys!" Then the Yukon Cornelius Peppermint scene was shown, followed by Santa's sleigh flying through the sky with the end credits. A letter writing campaign from fans who wanted to actually see the Misfit Toys get picked up and delivered prompted the deletion of the Peppermint scene to make room for the scene where the misfit toys are lamenting by the campfire, followed by Santa arriving and the toys hopping into his sack.
While the credits air, the scene shows an elf dropping the misfit toys out of the sleigh, using umbrellas as parachutes. This makes no sense, as everyone knows Santa delivers the toys himself, via the chimney. However, those die hard, letter writing misfit toys fans wanted to not only see the toys picked up, but delivered as well. Time and money didn't allow for a whole new scene, so the elf dropping the toys was added to the existing credits scene of Santa's sleigh flying through the sky.
Don't you feel enlightened?
Fun list. Thanks H5
I thought the "Dolly for Sue's" hairbows were set too tight and that's what caused her problems, haha!
