Post traumatic stress disorder can happen to people after they have suffered a traumatic experience. There is a feeling of constant fear, and a person can have nightmares and flashbacks about what happened.
It can also happen with any overwhelming personal experience.
With men, the most common reason is from military combat, and PTSD is commonly associated with soldiers from war.
There are various events that can lead to PTSD, such as:
- kidnapping
- rape
- war
- sexual or physical abuse
- assault
- childhood neglect
- car and plane crashes
- natural disasters
Signs of PTSD include:
- anxiety and emotional withdrawal
- re-experiencing the traumatic event
- flashbacks
- nightmares
Avoidance of the trauma and numbing
- not going to places where the trauma occurred
- feeling detached and emotionally numb
- sense of limited future
Symptoms cont'd.:
- jumpy, easily startled
- irritable, angry
- insomnia
- losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
- strong sense of guilt and worry
- unable to remember the traumatic event
Some treatments for PTSD include:
- cognitive-behavioural therapy
- psycho-dynamic therapy
- hypnosis along with cognitive-behavioural therapy
- acceptance and commitment therapy
