Through the centuries people took great pride in looking after their household furniture. Experience but also trial-and-error taught them how to make special concoctions for almost every kind of wood. Basic materials were used - soft soap, lemon juice, beeswax, turpentine, etc. Even today with modern techniques and material, we still make use of the tried and tested homemade tips.
Treat scratches on light wood with petroleum jelly or one teaspoon each of vinegar and raw linseed oil mixed together. For darker wood equal quantities of red wine and raw linseed oil can be used.
Scratches on light wood can be concealed with white or beige shoe polish. For scratches on darker wood you can use brown shoe polish and for ebony use black shoe polish.
To get rid of water marks on wood rub it with tooth paste. For stubborn marks add some bicarbonate of soda to the tooth paste and then polish with a soft cloth.
You can remove spilt wax from wood by placing a sheet of paper towel over it and then pressing lightly with a warm iron. The wax will melt and be absorbed by the towel. Afterwards, wipe the area with a weak solution of water and vinegar and dry with a clean cloth.
To bring the shine back to wood painted white, such as bathroom and kitchen cupboards, apply a mixture of whiting in warm water. Then polish with a soft cloth.
By applying just the basic homemade remedies we can keep our furniture beautiful while we also help to protect our health and the environment.
