Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ), can be a painful issue. The symptoms that usually occur with TMJ are headaches, jaw pain, and ear popping problems. There are a few exercises you can practice that may help your TMJ problem.
When you practice this exercise you are training your jaw to open straight and the correct width that it is supposed to open. To do this exercise, place your tongue on the roof of your mouth and slowly open and close your mouth. It is helpful to look in the mirror while doing this exercise so you can assure that you are opening your jaw straight. It may be helpful to do 5 repetitions of this exercise several times a day.
Start this exercise by relaxing your jaw muscles. Force the bottom portion of your jaw forward and press it back. This will help stretch the muscles in your jaw and will strengthen them as well.
If you have TMJ, chances are that you may have problems moving one or both sides of your jaw from side to side. Move the bottom portion of your jaw to either the left or the right, depending on what is more challenging for you. You may need to do this exercise with both sides. This will help loosen up your jaw and will allow you to use the muscles again that you have stopped using.
For those that suffer from TMJ may also have tight neck muscles. Start this exercise by standing straight up looking forward. Tuck your chin under by looking down. Repeat this about 5 times each day.
Place your index fingers on the area where your jaw opens and massage in a circular motion. If you are having any pain, this is an exercise that will soothe your pain. It may also help relieve any tension you may have in your jaw and is considered an exercise.
