A steaming mug or two of your favorite hot drink will warm the body as well as the soul. These five hot drinks are easy to prepare and can be made with spirits like brandy or rum or with ordinary beverages like milk or fruit juices.
The easiest way to make hot apple cider is in a crock pot. Take a gallon of apple cider and add aromatic spices, fresh ginger and a vanilla bean. Serve in warmed mugs with a cinnamon stick.
Mulled wine is made with red wine and common spices that are found in almost every kitchen, including cinnamon, allspice, cloves and black peppercorn. For full-bodied flavor, add to the mixture orange and lemon zest and brown sugar.
Although wassail is a traditional holiday drink, it can be enjoyed year round and is easy to make. Transform ordinary apple juice or cider into delicious wassail by adding orange, lemon and pineapple juices and cloves and cinnamon spices. Combine ingredients in a saucepan and cook over medium heat until well-blended. Simmer an additional 10 minutes and serve.
Nothing warms the body like a cup of hot cocoa, especially on a cold winter night. Use a basic hot chocolate recipe and pour into mugs that have been pre-warmed with hot water. Sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg on top, sip and enjoy.
