I am the proud "parent" of a 2 year old Yorkshire terrier that weighs 16 pounds and has the cutest floppy ears I have ever seen! Yes, I'm sure she's a purebred and yes, I know she doesn't meet breed standards. People are always astonished when I tell them what breed she is, after they try to guess some random mix of breeds, but I love love love my doggy, and here are the top 5 reasons why.
The breed standard for a Yorkshire Terrier is 7lbs or less. At a whopping 16lbs my adorable yorkie is more than twice that size! That means that there is twice at much cuteness to admire and love!
Tiny yorkies can be injured easily by other dogs, or small children. My "mutant" yorkie, as I affectionately like to call her, is not in danger of this. In addition to my little Ginger I also have a lab/shepherd mix, they play together all of the time, and boy does Ginger dominate!
When I mentioned the idea of getting a Yorkshire Terrier to my husband, he was understandably a little hesitant. He had a difficult time picturing himself walking a 5lb dog with a dainty pink leash. With our super-yorkie, he can take her for walks without feeling like his masculinity is being compromised!
I don't know if this actually has to do with her size, or if it's just her personality, but my big 'ol yorkie doesn't seem to suffer from a lot of the common little dog "problems" others might. She's not yappy, and she is certainly trained to potty outdoors.
Wherever I take Ginger someone always stops me and inquire about what breed she is. I get enjoyment from the looks on their faces when I tell them what breed she is, and the inevitable, "she's awfully big for a yorkie," that follows. It makes me chuckle :)
I was SO glad to view your darling pictures of Ginger and see that she is truly a mutant yorkie instead of being a roly poly one! She's just a big girl and there's nothing wrong with that. Gorgeous dog and nice article.
