Chances are, if you're already reading this list, you know that Robert Frost is awesome. Here are my five favorite Robert Frost poems.
Everyone knows and loves to quote from this poem, especially the last three lines. Something interesting that many people do not realize, however, is the way in which Frost equalizes the two roads. In the second and third stanzas he says, "Though as for that the passing there / Had worn them really about the same, / And both that morning equally lay..." In some ways, he's minimizing their differences to emphasize the importance of chance.
This poem has such an intricate understanding of human nature with vivid, subtle images and questions. My favorite lines: "Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder / If I could put a notion in his head."
Another poem that many people know and love, this one is surprisingly dark, but also peaceful. I always like to read this one out loud to hear the beautiful sound work and the rhyme that holds the whole poem together.
Not many are familiar with this wonderful poem. Spend some time with this one, read it slowly, then reread it. The syntax and images are confusing but that's exactly the point--it's there as "a guide...who only has at heart your getting lost." I love the imperative tense, as it's so different from Frost's better-known poems.
This is my favorite Robert Frost poem. It exposes such raw feelings and creates a whole and deep story in just 120 lines. I really recommend reading this one!
Below are links to my two personal favorites, "Directive" and "Home Burial." I encourage everyone to spend at least a few minutes with each of them because they're truly wonderful.
Wonderful list.
#3 is the first poem I ever had to memorize and I can still recite it.
