Introduction:In today's culture, we are often overwhelmed by Christmas music, movies and sales from November 1st straight on through the new year. Between this overexposure and the chaos of our everyday lives, it can be hard to find yourself in a Christmas mood. Here are a few things to try that might help!
Many restaurants and coffee shops offer special items that are only available around Christmas, such as gingerbread lattes. Other treats that are available year-round such as hot apple cider can also evoke the feeling of curling up in front of a fire watching the snow.
Scent has a powerful effect on our emotions. Smells that you associate with certain memories can take you back to that time, so try burning a candle that smells like peppermint or sugar cookies, or take the time to smell the pine trees at a tree lot. The memories triggered by these scents can kick your brain into a holiday mood.
While some families deck the hall as soon as the turkey is off the Thanksgiving table, you might find that all of the lights and decorations lose their jolly effect by the time Dec 25th rolls around. Try waiting around until at least December 1st, or better yet about 2 weeks before Christmas to avoid getting bored of the decorations before the big day even rolls around.
When you do pull out those boxes of holly and lights, try putting on a favorite Christmas movie or music in the background while you work.
The hotel where I used to work played a continuous loop of Christmas background music from Nov 1 through January. While it was fun at first, by about the second week of November, we wer all about ready to cry if we had to listen to "I'm Gettin Nothin For Christmas" one more time. If you feel like turning the radio on and hearing Holly Jolly Christmas one more time might bring you to tears, try asking friends for some more unconventional Christmas songs and put together a CD of music that is new to you.
These are great ways to get in the Christmas mood. Thanks for sharing this awesome list.
