Southeast Arkansas is blessed with numerous good bass fishing opportunities, but here are the top 5 picks in my opinion. These are in no particular order.
How could you leave out Lake Monticello in any discussion like this? Lake Monticello would probably not make the cut for number of bites, but the quality of bass caught more than makes up for lack of action. There are days on Monticello that are full of biting bass, but for the most part there are fewer bites with average size on many days in the 4 to 5 pound per bass range!
The Arkansas River has been churning out bass in record numbers for many years. Back in 1984 Rick Clunn set the Bassmasters Classic record for weight near downtown Pine Bluff in the Slackwater Harbor area. There are numerous one day tournaments during the year that 20 pounds won't get you a sniff of the first place check!
Speaking of bass factories, Lake Chicot is a prime example of waters that grow quality bass in great quanities. The lake is filled with man-made docks, cypress trees, and contour changes that can be loaded with bass depending on time of year. There are tournaments held on Chicot during most weekends during the warmer months with winning weights commonly topping 20 pounds!
Finally, a lake that not everyone has heard about. This little secret is just outside of Dermott, Arkansas and is filled with cypress trees and laydowns that hold a nice population of quality Northern Largemouths. This could be the top spinnerbait lake in the state! There are lots of bass in Wallace that are in the 6 to 7 pound range and a 10 pounder is not that uncommon!
Southeast Arkansas has many potholes and barrow pits along the Arkansas and Mississippi Rivers that offer up some of the best all-around bass fishing opportunities anywhere. Names like Possum Fork, Wargo's Hole, Kate Adams, and Leland Chute are just a few of the names an angler may hear in conversations anywhere Seark anglers gather. Willow trees, laydowns, and stumps hold the lion's share of the bass in the these holes. These lakes put out numbers of quality bass every year! Most of these places do not have launching facilities for larger bass boats, so be prepared to use smaller boats to take advantage of this fantastic action!
