I used to play tennis all the time. I got so good, I was able to enter a few local tournaments. After playing for so many years, i got pretty good at it. Here are some tips on how to play tennis well.
Have a good serve can give you a serious advantage. Part of the reason why players like Michael Chang never became one of the greatest players was because of his serve - it was just so weak.
A lot of players put a lot of top spin on the ball. Andre Agassi used to do this alot, but not as much as the top spin king, Thomas Muster who used to put so much spin on the ball that it would give a kick every time it landed on the ground. There are some advantages to that (e.g., confusing the opponent), but overall, it's not a good strategy because it slows the ball down and takes more of your energy to generate such top spin. Rather than doing that, you should flatten out your strokes the way Pete Sampras and Stefan Edberg used to do. Those guys could hit balls that appeared like the balls were sliding on the ground. As a result, the balls are much faster and harder to get to by your opponent.
You need good footwork in tennis. Always return to the center of the court after you've hit a ball. That will put you in a good position to go after the next ball.
If you ever hope to win in tennis, you need to stay in shape, Tennis requires a lot of movement. If you get tired, you will start to become lazy and make errors.
Playing tennis is a real workout. Unless you want to die of dehydration, make sure you bring lots of cold water. Drink some water during each changeover. The more thirsty you become, the more tired you'll feel and the more you'll make mistakes.
If you follow these tips, you'll improve your chances of winning in tennis.
