He's back. Governor Moonbeam will be returning to Sacramento after defeating Meg Whitman for California's top elected executive spot. Brown's been busy since his last stint as California's governor, but many folks may have forgotten a few of the things that make him such an interesting politician--love him or hate him.
When Brown was Governor in the 70s, he decided he didn't need to travel in a limo. Instead, he opted to get from Point A to Point B in a no-frills 1974 Plymouth Satellite.
During Brown's earlier stint in Sacramento, he lived in a modest apartment instead of taking up residence in a recently remodeled Governor's mansion. Reporters said that its furnishings consisted of an overstuffed bookcase and a mattress on floor.
Governor Moonbeam is married these days, but as a bachelor he dated some well-known figures including actress Natalie Wood, singer Stevie Nicks and singer Linda Rondstadt.
Jerry Brown didn't just go to Yale. He also went to a Jesuit seminary. Brown was well on his way to becoming a part of the priesthood before he determined that politics were his higher calling.
Governors' official portraits are generally conservative studies of the office holder painted in deep, dark hues in an almost photo-realistic manner. Not Brown's. His ultra-modern portrait is vibrant, colorful, impressionistic and... well... pretty funny!
Whether you're a fan of Brown's policies or fear them, there's no denying the fact that he's one of America's most interesting political figures of the past 50 years. These five facts are only a sliver of the story of his long, strange trip.
Good job on this list.
Great list.
