Christmas comes at the same time each year but often sneaks up on us anyway. Whether you're a chronic procrastinator, simply overlooked someone during earlier shopping expeditions, or just now realized that it really is December already, these last minute gift ideas are for you!

Homemade Treats

Whip up a batch of delicious fudge or holiday cookies. Cut the cooled fudge to fit inside small gift boxes and wrap in festive paper. Arrange cookies on a red or green paper plate and cover with cellophane, or stack them in a decorative holiday tin. Make extras to keep on hand for unexpected drop-in guests. If you're kitchen challenged, enlist a friend or family member to help.

Gift Baskets

Create individualized gift baskets based on interests or hobbies for everyone on your list. And don't let the term "basket" fool you - use whatever container is appropriate. For instance, give an assortment of tea in a decorative mug, garden tools and flower seeds wrapped in a gardening apron, or a variety of children's art supplies in a sturdy tote bag or plastic shoebox.

Gift Cards or Certificates

You can buy gift cards for specific merchants or get a prepaid VISA gift card that is good most everywhere. If you'd like to gift some type of on-going experience, such as karate lessons or admission to a local theme park, you can often purchase a gift certificate or annual pass.

Charitable Donations

Honor your loved ones with a donation to their favorite cause or give to a local organization that addresses an issue of importance to them. For instance, support the local animal shelter to honor a pet lover or donate to a library in the name of an avid reader.

Gift of Time

Often, the best gift is the gift of time. With our busy schedules, most people on your list would probably appreciate some undivided attention. Rather than spending money on things, spend time with your friend or loved one.




Final Thoughts

Finally, especially for teens, cash is king. While some folks may feel giving the green is in poor taste, those are not usually the same folks on the receiving end of the gift.
