Introduction:

If disaster hits, it is important to have emergency preparedness supplies. Each person in a family can have their own kit or there can be a household kit that includes items for everyone. Personal kits can be put in a backpack or small bag so that they can easily be carried in case of evacuation. A household kit can be stored in a watertight container in an easily accessible location. Pack enough items for three to five days.

First Aid

One of the most important emergency preparedness supplies are items that you will need to take care of yourself medically. These items include medications, soaps, ointments, bandages, gauze, and personal hygiene articles such toothpaste, toothbrushes and toilet paper. A first aid kit usually has many items that will be needed in the event of an emergency. Make a list of all family prescriptions and have copies of medical insurance cards available as well as personal identification.

Food

Food will be important as part of emergency preparedness supplies. Snack foods can be included and they should be high in calories. Get some canned foods that are high in protein like refried beans, chili, tuna and other meats. Do not forget to pack a manual can opener and some utensils. If you have pets, remember to prepare for them too.

Lighting and Radio

Include a flashlight and extra batteries and bulbs as part of your emergency preparedness supplies. Hand cranked flashlights are useful because they do not need batteries. You may want to have some light sticks. A battery or hand cranked radio will become important in an emergency. There are many different kinds of these radios available on the market.

Water

Water will be an important part of any emergency. Water will be needed for cleaning and drinking. A person will need to have at least one gallon of water a day just to drink. Have some bottled water available, or put some in in a large camping water jug. Keep the jug filled and rotate water constantly so that it is fresh.

Useful Items

In the event of a disaster, there are some essential emergency preparedness supplies that will be extremely helpful. These items would be work gloves, protective goggles, strong and large plastic bags to be used as tarps, warm clothing, socks, blankets and good shoes. Many people think that a whistle would be an important item to have on hand. You may want to have some items that will keep people occupied and calm such as games, toys and writing utensils.

We have several 5 gallon buckets with 72 hours of food etc... in out garage ready for the car. Good article.
