Unique August holidays are sometimes overlooked, but really deserve more attention. These August holidays were birthed out of well deserved honors.
U.S. Coast Guard Day originated on August 4, 1790 when Congress first authorized the construction of 10 cutter ships to enforce U.S. tarriff laws. The Revenue Cutter Service eventually became the U.S. Coast Guard. Grand Haven, Michigan has a huge Coast Guard celebration every first week of August with thousands of tourists attending.
Sister's Day is celebrated the first Sunday of August. The origin of Sister's Day started in the Asian Indian tradition with the love between sisters.
National Lighthouse Day originated through an act of Congress on August 7, 1789. The Federal Government took over responsibility for building and operating our nation's lighthouses. It is a day to honor our lighthouses and the beacon of light that they provided for boats and ships at sea. Many lives were saved but these lights of hope. There are many preservation societies for these wonderful lighthouses.
The origin of son and daughter day is not quite known but we do know that they deserve a day of honor and love. Nothing is more important than love and relationship and sons and daughters are a huge part of that. Celebrate your children on August 11 and every day!
A well deserved celebration in honoring our seniors who gave so much of themselves for our future. August 21 Senior's Day originated and was proclaimed a day to appreciate our seniors, by our great former president Ronald Reagan in 1988.
