Like it or not, we all eat foods from time to time that are more comforting to our hearts than to our waist-lines. Don't get me wrong, I strive to live a healthy life-style by eating mostly healthful foods, exercising, and splurging only on occasion. But, when I do allow myself a treat, these comfort foods usually are at the top of my list.
For me, the gooier and cheesier, the better. Nothing compares to a hot baked dish of macaroni and cheese after a long stressful day. You can always comfort yourself by telling yourself that you're fueling your body with protein and bone-strengthening calcium.
Whether I'm at a fast-food restaurant or at home, there is nothing more comforting than a plate of hot salty soft French fries. I know some of you are grimacing at the word soft, but I prefer them that way. My husband likes them crunchy, so we are always swapping fries when we go out to eat.
My grand-mother makes a homemade chocolate icing that makes the long drive home seem like a quick stroll around the block. When eating a piece of her cake, I get all sentimental and nostalgic.
For some reason, when I'm sick, all I want to eat or think that I can eat, is a hamburger. Perhaps it is the ease with which I can hold it in my hand and devour it or the energy that it brings my weak body. Whatever the reason, hamburgers are the medicine of choice for me.
Whether I'm eating them for breakfast or for a Sunday night snack, pancakes and syrup always bring a smile to my face and warmth to my heart. I like thick pancakes with maple syrup best. When they are cooked in a cast iron skillet, they are so good that I simply lose my mind and can eat enough for two.
