If you or someone you are with breaks a leg, arm or have a large wound, get emergency care immediately! Self care is only temporary at best. Emergency Room physicians will be able to set the broken bone or treat the gaping wound.
If a person's breathing has changed dramatically and he is short of breath even while resting, emergency care may be needed. Call 911 immediately If he has stopped breathing, and administer to stabilize the person until the ambulance and paramedics arrive.
If a person complains of acute pain that does not go away after taking pain medication or other self care, urgent medical attention is needed. He should go directly to the hospital emergency room to determine the reason for the pain and get proper treatment.
In general, cold sweats do not require emergency care; however if the person is also complaining of chest or abdominal pain and lightheadedness, these symptoms could indicate a heart attack or other serious condition and should be given immediate emergency aid.
Bleeding that will not stop after pressure is applied to the wound needs emergency care to prevent unnecessary loss of blood. Sutures or other medical procedures may need to be performed; so go to the emergency room right away.
