Staying warm during the winter is a necessity that usually means a high gas or electric bill. Keep your bills low by implementing some of these strategies.
Try heating only the living room during the day. Cooking will naturally heat your kitchen, and chances are you don't use the other rooms as often. Heat the bedroom at night. Keep a space heater in the bathroom and use it only when people need to take a bath or shower.
Check out the gas and electric prices in your area. Talk to people and find out if gas or electric heat is less expensive -- usually gas is cheaper.
Don't take off your jacket when you come inside. Keep a pair of slippers or thick socks handy, and wear them when you're not wearing your shoes. A thick robe can make cold mornings bearable -- you might even be able to get ready for work without turning on the heat.
A wood heater will be best if you have a source of inexpensive wood. Gas heaters can be very inexpensive, especially if you don't run them all day. Avoid using multiple electric heaters to heat your home.
You can insulate your home even if you're not handy. Hang thick curtains over the windows to keep out drafts and place rugs over wooden floors. Use caulk to seal cracks that let in cold air.
Think of your bill every time you go to turn on your heater, and chances are, it'll be much lower.
