Warm Up America began in Wisconsin in 1991. Their mission is to have groups and organizations crochet blankets that are donated to local shelters, hospitals, nursing homes and various other organizations. Each blanket is made up of 49 crocheted squares and the idea is to have each person crochet a square or two which are then assembled together to make the blanket.
Crocheting a blanket for Warm Up America is a very worthy cause because the blanket your group crochets will keep someone warm. It could be a homeless person or a patient undergoing chemotherapy.
Teach the spirit of giving by having your group crochet a blanket for Warm Up America. Giving to others is a satisfying and rewarding experience.
The Warm Up America foundation prefers that the crocheted blankets stay within the community. They believe in neighbors helping neighbors. However, if your group cannot find a local place to donate the blanket, the Warm Up America foundation will distribute the crocheted blanket for your group.
Often when there is a large group, it's hard to get to know others well. Crocheting squares for a Warm Up America blanket is a good way to promote teamwork among the members of the group.
Crocheting is fun and a fairly easy skill to learn. The only stitch needed to crochet a blanket for Warm Up America is a single crochet which is a very basic stitch. Your new skill will serve you well.
