PC internet security doesn't have to mean spending lots of cash for good computer security software. There are many good free antivirus, antimalware, and firewall security programs that are downloadable out there. Here are some that are top rated.
Besides being free, this security suite is constantly rated as one of the best. It has a high detection rate for spyware, viruses, worms, and trojans, and runs fast scans. I like that it includes a link scanner for safe web surfing and doesn't use popup ads. I found it easy to install and set up and have been using it for over 3 years now.
A close second to AVG, Avira's antivirus software has actually been found to detect more malware and give fewer false positives. Its setup can be daunting with too many unclear choices, and the same is true with the warnings it gives when problems are found. It also uses daily popups to try and sell its commercial version.
Avast antivirus not only scans your computer for dirty bugs but also scans websites and emails. Its detection rate, while not as high as the top two security programs, has still been found to be in the 90% range for computer malware. When Avast is installed you will be given 60 days to register for a user's license which is required.
This Microsoft free antivirus software does not provide a firewall or detection due to unusual behavior. It is rated high for finding and handling viruses, worms, backdoors, bots and trojans, but it was not as good at detecting spyware and adware. Its scans can take longer than the other security suites.
Unlike the top four antivirus programs on my list, Ad Aware does not provide real time protection. It has to be scheduled to regularly scan your computer to find spyware and other malware as well as rootkits. It then deletes or quarantines them.
Finding these and other free downloads is not hard. One of the best sites I known for safe, secure downloads of all types is pcworld.com, look for the link below.
