It has now been over a year that we have survived without a microwave. The topic of replacing our last microwave comes up from time to time, but nobody has caved and gone to buy one yet.
Those costly overly packaged foods that are designed specifically for the microwave? We are able to avoid them entirely. Not only do we save on cost, but we avoid the preservatives that are required to make those foods so convenient.
This is a huge one. There is now a fully useful, giant empty space on the counter that used to be invisible due to occupancy of microwave.
Not having a microwave is one less thing that is plugged in and sucking up the juice. Next on my list to go is the clothes dryer...but I remember those crunchy, scrape-your-skin-off, air-dried towels at Grandma and Grandpa's so we still have the dryer for now.
Really, how many clocks do we need to have in the house? I can think of eight right now that need to be reset for daylight savings time or power outages. No microwave means one less and that probably only saves a whopping ten seconds, but still...
A microwave accident is what landed us in no-microwave land to begin with. Without a microwave, I do not have to worry about a young person putting a mug with a metal handle in the microwave to heat up water, resulting in the cup partially melting, sparks flying and black smoke filling the top level of the house.
Excellent list.
I haven't used a microwave in over a year, now. I don't miss it.
Bravo! Great reasons to go microwaveless and fun read too!
