Now that Christmas is over, my baby has a lot of new toys! However, as with any baby, she will happily play with almost anything we give her. Sometimes letting your baby play with a household item makes them happy because they think it's a new toy. Here are 5 household items that entertain my baby.
One of the easiest household items to hand my baby when she's bored is a set of measuring cups. She loves to un-stack them, re-stack them, shake them around, and basically just play all over the room with them. Since my measuring cups are made of a tough plastic material, there's no way she can break them and they can't hurt her either. I just have to remember to wash them before I cook with them :)
Got a delivery? Open it up and give your baby the box. My baby isn't old enough to play pretend with boxes yet, but she does love to put toys into and out of the box, and push it around the room. Before you send that box out to the recycle bin, let your baby have some fun with it first.
The world is moving away from DVDs as everything is "streaming" now, but if you have a stack of DVDs like we do, you might find they are still useful! My baby loves playing with our stack of DVD cases. We know she can't open them since even we have a hard time opening many of them. Stacking and un-stacking, what fun! We don't let her play with these unsupervised but so far she hasn't hurt any of them.
My baby loves tuperware. When we are out and about, we can hand her a little mini tuperware (after she ate her snack out of it) and she'll just hold it and shake it and smile. At home, I give her tuperware anytime she's in the kitchen and she'll push it around, try to open and close it, and put things in it.
Anytime we finish a soda or Gatorade, we puts the lid on and my baby can't wait to play with it. We screw the lids on real tight so there is no way she can get it off - I can't even get it off! She loves to bang them around, and even give them a hug. After watching us drink out of it, she is excited that she is allowed to play with it.
If your baby seems bored, look around your house and see if you have any safe household items that your baby can play with. Babies get excited just because they are allowed to play with something most people would consider "off-limits". Toys are great, but sometimes babies need to see and play with something new. Add some household items into your toy rotation instead of spending money on more toys!
