As the cooler weather comes it's important to make sure your home is insulated so that you don't throw your money out the window!
If you don't have one already - get one! Programmable thermostats allow you to control the temperature in your home and set it so that your home doesn't need to heat itself when no one is there. Set the temperature for your comfort level, keeping in mind that a degree or two lower can lower your heating costs! Also set the thermostat to lower the temperature when you're sleeping or away.
You really can't have too much insulation! Insulate your attic floor so heat (as it rises) doesn't escape up there. Insulate your windows with thermal backed window treatments. There are even insulation covers for exterior wall outlets and switches.
Sure everyone has heard of switching to CFL light bulbs. They're more energy efficient than standard halogen bulbs and last longer. Though more expensive than CFL's are LED bulbs. They are more efficient, last even longer and don't need to warm up like CFL's.
Make sure all windows and doors are sealed with caulk and weather stripping. This helps to block out any air that may pass through.
Actually furniture placement helps to prevent heat loss. Make sure that sofas and chairs are not blocking any heat sources. By blocking the transfer of heat you're paying to heat up the back of the chair and yet the room will still feel chilly.
