Microbreweries, sometimes called hand-crafted or speciality brew, made beer and ale in limited amounts, usually for a limited market. And while some fine beer continues to be made in the smallest amounts for a limited audience, some microbreweries have hit the big time with a larger limited release over a region, rather than a small territory.
Headquartered in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Dogfish Head operates both a brewery and eatery on the main street of this beachside town. The founder is Sam Calagione and the offerings include the 90 Minute IPA, offered throughout the year, and a Pumpkin Ale, made only during the fall.
Other offerings include 60- and 120-Minute Indiana Pale Ales, also known as IPAs. When in Rehoboth, drop by the ale house for pasta night and a glass of fresh tap beer.
Sun King Brewing operates from a location in downtown Indianapolis, the capital of the Hoosier State. Sun King offers a variety of ales and seasonal beers. The single location features a tasting room and a gift store.
The house beers feature Sunlight Cream Ale, Wee Mac Scottish Ale, Bitter Druid ESB and Osiris Pale Ale. Check out the brewery during the 2012 Super Bowl to be held at Lucas Stadium in Indianapolis.
The name of the Great Lakes Brewing Company gives more than a hint of the location of the brewery. Located on Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio, the GLBC welcomes visitors to their brew pub and store on Market Avenue. Speciality beers and ales include Christmas Ale and the year-round offerings include Burning Rive Pale Ale, after the local river that famously caught fire in the 1970s due to intense pollution.
Also featured is the Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, a nod to an infamous ship wreck in Lake Erie. The GLBC also makes the Commodore Perry IPA and the Eliot Ness Amber Lager. The company is rich with local history and both Perry and Ness ended up in Lake Erie; Perry on a vessel and the famous G-Man Ness as a suicide. The other two year-round beers include Dortmunder Gold Lager and the Wright Pils.
For people who know the history of Tampa, Florida, the name Cigar City Brewing is easy to peg. The city was once the hub for handmade cigars. The brewing company is operated by a father and son team, Joey Redner, Sr. and Jr. The company specialties are Imperial Stout and India Pale Ale.
