Introduction:You see it all the time the parent trying to get their shopping done with a screaming and out of control child. Wonder how other parents got their kids to behave? Here is five ways to help get your children to behave in the stores.
Allow the child to get something small from the store only if they behave. A few time of not getting what they wanted and the child should behave more the next visit to a store. Remember not feel sorry and give in, a parent must stand behind what they say.
Clearly explain to the child(ren) how you expect them to behave and what not to do. Also inform them what punishment they will get for acting up in the store.
When time outs work great at home, you can still use them in the store. Great time out spots are in the bathroom, outside on the sidewalk, or in the car. It is much easier to give a time out when shopping with other people, but this may also make your shopping trip longer.
A good swat on the buns is nothing to be ashamed about and really doesn't harm the child. The child gets a quick ouch and knows to knock it off now. Usually with good discipline at home, the swat in the store will be very embarrassing for the child and they know they will get punished all day.
Pull the child near and in a normal or low but very stern voice tell them to stop their bad behavior or else. Be prepared to give the child an answer to "or else what" from the child. Although your child may be sweet they will try to cross that line sooner or later.
Even with using all five of these top steps it may not work the first time. However, if the parent keeps working on it, each shopping trip should get better.
