Robert Indiana was born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana in 1928. He is a painter, graphic artist, sculptor and watercolorist. His art works incorporate text, primary colors and simple words. His early study was at the Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis. He went on to study at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute, the Chicago Art Institute and the University of Edinburgh.
Indiana's iconic work was commissioned in 1964 for the New York State Pavilion at the New York World's Fair. It was a 20-foot image of the text. "Eat."
The "LOVE" pieces are probably Indiana's best-known works. It appeared on a U.S. postage stamp and also, as variations, for art and music performances. The letters are stacked in various configurations and printed in many colors. "LOVE" first appeared in 1996.
This art piece, as the title implies is a number. It appeared in 1971 and set the tone for Indiana's thematic work in numbers and letters.
Indiana incorporated his basic designs, including the LOVE image and various important numbers, into poster designs. Operas, symphonies and art museum exhibits are all part of the design series.
Indiana also completed a series of famous Americans, including Susan B. Anthony and Betsy Ross and the first flag. The prints of the figures are brightly colored and symbolize the basic act the subject is known for related to American history.
