The foods found in a Jewish deli may differ slightly from delicatessen to delicatessen but the below 5 foods are almost always present.
And, slice it thin, please...Corned beef is a typical Jewish deli food and it's also typically very good. Get it on rye bread with just a schmear of mustard.
Oy, the pastrami! Mouth watering is the only way you can describe this Jewish deli meat. Similarly served to corned beef, get your pastrami on rye. If you don't keep kosher, consider placing a slice of swiss cheese on top and getting the sandwich served hot.
There may be no better half-done pickles in the world than those giant beasts in the glass jar just sitting in their brine and waiting for you. Crunchy and lighter green than full pickles, a good half-done should burst in your mouth with each bite.
A good Jewish deli should always have a rack of freshly baked bagels ready to go. Get your favorite variety but don't be surprised if you only choices are egg, onion, poppy seed or everything bagels. Real Jewish delis don't offer those 'other' bagel flavors such as blueberry (ugh), cinnamon raisin (what were they thinking?!!!) or banana nut (come on people!).
Lox is the smoked belly side of a salmon and, when done properly, should not taste the least bit fishy. A good Jewish deli should have lox available at all moments. The best Jewish delicatessens should offer lox fresh sliced off the fish in any thickness you prefer.
There are, of course, many other items in a Jewish deli - the above just happen to be my favorites. Whatever you choose, you can bet that you'll get the freshest meat and best quality taste if you visit a true Jewish deli.
