Comprehending the diagnosis of being Bi-Polar is a major mental challenge for those who have been diagnosed with the "disease." It is not like being told you have arthritis, or high cholesterol, it is more like being told that there is an illusive invisible little man (the chemical) running around in your brain pressing buttons and switching your moods at his discretion. Sometimes the little man makes you depressed and sometimes he fills you with joy (mania). There seems to be no doubt that the depression pole is the most difficult to understand and counter. Here are my top five non-medicated ways to deal with the Depression Pole. -dc
There is nothing wrong with darkness, when we close our eyes, it is what we experience because we may be sleeping. During the day however, when we are up, we need to see the light. Darkness during the day can seem eerily dreary, even for those that are not Bi-Polar. If you are feeling depressed, darkness during the day can intensify your depression. Open your curtains, pull up your shades, if there is a room in your home with no window, install lights or put in a lamp. If the sun is out, invite it into your home; remember, the sun gives off vital invigorating energy, make it your friend.
We all know that the news, in whichever form it presents itself, whether on television, radio and newspapers will contain mostly negative events. It is understandable for us to stay current and know what is happening around the world, however, don't drown yourself in the news' sea of negativity, rather stay afloat and take control over it. Read tidbits of negative news and keep moving. Find good news by using the Internet. Remember, You can control the Internet, find and read what you want to keep your depression levels low.
Undeniably, music can have profound physical, mental and emotional effects in human beings. Common sense knowledge tells us that if we listen to a sad song, we may most likely feel sad, if we listen to a happy song, we may most likely feel happy. So why not choose the music that most likely may help you feel happy? The key factor here is, choose what you feel will not add to your depression, don't listen to blues if your boyfriend just left you, please don't do it.
Films can be like music on steroids because they add the visual element. If you are depressed please don't watch a film that will literally reach into your tear ducts and turn your eyes into Niagara Falls, rather find a funny movie about the same subject. This may seem contradictory, but it will let you see the funnier side of things, and may have an ending which will help you see things more optimistically.
Alcohol is the worst possible tool in the shed to fix even the most minor of problems. Alcohol is illusive and sneaks up on you. It first makes you feel like everything is amazing, all of our troubles are gone, we are on top of the world-- then suddenly when it decides to take those feelings away, it will murder you emotions. Alcohol will befriend your depression and control it, but not for the good. Run from it when you're depressed, or it will make sure you feel worse, it has no mercy. Don't drink, especially if you are Bi-Polar, it can retire you.
I hope that these Top Five suggestions help anyone who is fighting or fights depression. One does not have to be Bi-Polar to experience depression, but for those who are, keep fighting, even if you lose some battles, just don't lose the war. -dc
