Heating your house is a big energy expense in Winter, but there are ways that you can cut your heating energry consumption.
Seal all of the drafts in your house--around windows with caulking if necessary, and around doors with draft blockers. Double-sided "As Seen on TV" draft blockers are an excellent choice because they move along with your door, and you don't have to move them.
Close your chimney damper if you can when it is not in use. Also use a heavy cover over your fireplace screen when your fireplace is not in use to block the cold air that still may seep in.
You think about vents letting air out, not in. But a bathroom or kitchen vent works both ways, so it can let unecessary cold air in. Turn air vents off as soon as you are done using them.
Open your curtains and drapes in the daytime to let the sunshine in to help warm your house. Remember to close them at night, though, because windows get cold and this can defeat the purpose.
Make sure your heater is not using unnecessary energy. Keep your filters changed regularly, and have your heater checked yearly by a mechanic before winter comes.
