Does your child hate going to bed? Is he/she scared of the dark? Does she make up any excuse to stay up or have you in the room? Here are 5 tips to help you and your child over this stage.
Be sure to have a night light in the child's room. Also, a small flashlight of their own is a good idea. It helps them feel more secure and in control. Sure, they may play with it awhile, but this will help take their mind off their fears and soon, they just may be snoozing!
Sure, it will take a little extra time, but doing this with your child will help dispel any fears that "something" is hiding out in their closet or under their bed. Of course, your reassurance is a given.
Reading a bedtime story is a great way to get your child's mind off of scary thoughts. Be sure to read an uplifting book, nothing even remotely scary! And if your child is learning to read, remember to let them read to you too!
Turn the TV off after dinner and involve your child in quiet activities such as reading or playing quietly with toys. Too much TV and electronic games keeps their active imagination alive and it's hard to suddenly settle into sleep.
Some children are very sensitive of caffeine and should not have it at all during the day. Other's can handle a small amount but should not have it after 2 P.M. With no caffeine in their systems, it will be easier to fall asleep. Don't be fooled into thinking your child doesn't get caffeine. Coffee and tea are not the only caffeine culprits. Think chocolate: Candy, hot cocoa, soda etc. These are things a child should have in moderation if at all. The less caffeine, the better.
These are but a few ideas to help and there are, of course, many other methods to tame the monsters in your child's mind. A loved child is a secure child. The fact that you are seeking out information to help them says they are loved by you, and you can be sure, that with this love, attention, and time, your little one will go to bed with much less anxiety.
Great list.
I like all your ideas!
Great advice.
Thank you for the list of great parenting tips for getting over the fear of bedtime. My children just thought they would miss something and I would tell them there was a surprise for tomorrow for them after they slept. There always was a little something on their bed when they woke up if just a note from me.
That's a great idea!
Good tips for bedtime. My girls used to listen to cassette tapes of happy kids songs and that helped them. :)
